Kathryn Pratt
Kathryn migrated west from London in 2008 seeking a more aquatic existence. Despite being brought up in the rolling green hills of Surrey, Kathryn’s early introduction to diving by her father has guaranteed what will surely be a life-long obsession with the sea and all that lives in it.
Her creative inspiration is not only drawn from the chilly, murky waters of South Devon but also her numerous adventures in South East Asia, the Caribbean and Red Sea. Kathryn became a diving instructor aged twenty and divides her time between working on her paintings and teaching with Teign Diving Centre in Teignmouth.
A decade ago, throughout ‘A’ level Art & Design, Kathryn experimented with a variety of media but found the versatility of oils and intense colours suited her developing style. Art college had considerable appeal, although she decided to take an alternative path into Graphic Design at a Soho-based web design company. Kathryn continued designing during her time at university while exploring a potential career in academia but the lure of a life as an artist by the sea prevailed.
The paintings Kathryn creates strive to capture the essence of the great, empty blue and the extraordinary life that exists within it. Diving is a wonderful escape from the busy and demanding world we inhabit that she has been inspired to produce art which will immediately evoke a sense of tranquility and also curiosity about the underwater realm.
